So, a few weeks ago I decided to try a new install of Debian on my laptop. I’d run Ubuntu over the years and while it’s a great system I wanted a little more freedom on the customization end and I am not a huge fan of the way the interface has gone.
So I got reading, and reading and more reading and settled on Debian and I have to say, Wow!
I have Debian 12 with Cinnamon as the window manager, customized with various panels and menus, so I have only what I want at hand available along with a customized Lenovo style grub boot loader as well.
It’s running on a Lenovo T14 Gen1 with 40GB RAM and 1TB nvme drive and it is smooth as glass.
Steam installed without any problem and I’ve yet to have a game that either doesn’t have native Linux support or works under Steam Proton flawlessly.
Heroic Games Launcher tackles Epic games along with GoG as well. As with Steam, everything just works.
The only thing that I’ve encountered a problem with is Nexus Mod Manager and that’s something I can’t complain about too much as it’s a modding program for Fallout: New Vegas. There are ways to get it working, it just takes some tinkering vs. an out of the box installer that just works.
All in all, I have to say I haven’t booted into Windows 11 in a few weeks and I can’t see myself going back anytime soon.
