Chilton tissue covering test

I decided to try some covering tests for the tissue on one of my latest planes, a Chilton DW1.
It’s one of the old Vernon kits and the balsa is quite delicate so I’ve ended up replacing a fair bit of it.
I had tried an entire wing using EZ-Dope but I found it had a very rubbery texture when cured and dry. The tissue tack also left streaks and with a bit of disappointment I decided to tear it all off and start again.
I decided to try some of the common solutions found in magazines and online forums to see which would work best for me.

I tried a panel using hairspray and it works well but has a lot of shrink.
Next up was different solutions of carpenter’s glue and Modge Pudge. I measured out each, recorded the solution and position on the wing and went through the tedious process of coating, waiting for coats to dry and more waiting for coats to dry.
With all of that I prefer the look of the 10:1 Modge Podge using 3 – 4 coats.
